Info About My Beautiful Home

My husband and I moved into this home at 2109 Aaron Road in November of 2009. At that point, this was one of those homes that you had to have some “vision” to want it. The home did not have too much that was “pretty” about it, but it did have the 2 things that we had decided we could not live without. It was all one level, and it was an open floor plan. We purchased this house, and have spent the past few years making it our home.

We started with removing the carpet and linoleum in the main living spaces (den/kitchen, living and dining rooms, and the hallways). We had new sand-and-stain hardwood floors put in almost immediately. We chose a dark brown stain, and “Wow!” what a difference new floors make. We also removed an ugly island/table combo that was in the kitchen, and some interesting 80’s style cedar railing, coupled with a mirrored accent wall, in the dining area.  Things were already looking up!

Living Room / Dining Room

(What was once the biggest eye sore, has become my favorite room!)

Task #2 was a must-have for us, on the outside of the house. Another one of the main reasons we bought this house was the lot. It was perfect for us. We wanted an area for our dogs to be able to roam and play, and with a baby on the way, we wanted to have a place where our children could have an area of their own as well. This lot was perfect for both. The whole lot of completely flat and perfect for a pool. But for us this was not what was missing. We needed a fence.  So, we bit the bullet and fenced in this large backyard. We went with the 4ft wooden picket fence in the front, and the black coated chain link in the back. And we are so glad we did! The coated chain link almost disappears again the trees in the back. It’s almost like we don’t have a fence at all, which is what you want when you have this backyard…and no backdoor neighbors.

And the screened in porch was built to complement the beauty of nature we get to look out on everyday. So, if you just to watch an awesome display of God’s nature at work. We have tons of wildlife scurrying and flying around to keep you busy watching for hours. So if you are a fan of early mornings with a cup of coffee and a book, or just a lazy day in the hammock, this porch will not disappoint. When we moved in there was a hottub, so it is wired a 22o volt outlet, if it’s your thing. But whatever you want to use this porch for, it is LARGE, and perfect for a quiet sit by yourself, or for entertaining a crowd.

Screened-in Back Porch

Since these initial remodeling tasks, we have painted every wall house except 2 rooms (because we actually liked their colors), we removed linoleum in the bonus room/office and stained the concrete beneath. It looks awesome!! We painted the shutters and front door, and have started updating light fixtures. We removed the old vertical blinds in the den and bonus room and hung new curtains. We removed all the metal mini blinds and have recently put up 2″ wood blinds throughout the house.

Den Area

The appliances have been updated in the kitchen, and we think a new sink and some new countertops in the kitchen could really make a huge difference. We have not made this investment yet, but would love to see this done. The original cabinets are in great shape, and smooth fronts have a very clean and modern look that is actually back in style!

Kitchen Area

This house is very shady, so it keeps cool in the summer heat, which seems like most of the year when you live in Alabama! And, we just put in a brand new furnace in December 2011 (with a 5 year transferable warranty), that will keep you nice and toasty in the winter months. Our house has a gas starter fireplace which is a great feature, but the floor to ceiling stone in our A-frame living room is what caught my attention immediately.

I think we have gotten spoiled by our house at times. No, it is not perfect, but it does have so many great features. I think the best thing is it’s ALL 1 LEVEL!! When I visit others homes with flights of stairs, I kinda cringe at the thought of having to carry groceries up, or tote babies up and down everyday. And I can’t imagine being a bit older and having to worry about falling down a dangerous flight of stairs.

The built-ins in the den have been so much fun for me as I love to decorate, and re-decorate often. I am so glad we kept them as we thought of tearing them out originally when the hardwoods were laid. There is an electrical outlet in them and an outlet for cable hookup. I even used the built-ins as a faux mantle this year since we use the den area most often. I thought it turned out quite nice.

This home was actually built with 2 master bedrooms that are plenty big even for our oversized furniture and king size bed. The other 2 rooms are great for kids, an office, or guest rooms. The bonus room/”man cave”, my husband uses as his office, as he works from home. It is perfect as an office since it is the most distant room from the main living area, and has a great view of the peaceful backyard through the sliding glass door. This would also be a cool media room, “man cave” (the concrete floors are very “manly”), or playroom a for kiddos.

Bonus Room / Office

I love this house. I do not want to move, but we have had some huge life changes over the past year, (adopting and becoming a stay at home mom), that cause us to need to downsize, but if we could stay…we would. This house is perfect for us, and anyone who loves the convenience of one level in a quiet established neighborhood.
